World War I: The Definitive Visual History (Print ISBN 978-1409347613) is out today. For this project Luped called in over 6000 images from museums, galleries, libraries and agencies around the world; just over 700 were selected for publication.
The book covers events from 1870 leading up to World War 1, through to the signing of the Versailles treaty and the commemoration of the dead that occurred afterwards. The use of illustrated timelines, feature spreads on technology, key individuals and before and after sections help the reader connect key events. This together with contemporary accounts and images, helps convey the overwhelming scale of the conflict and loss of life.
It can be difficult to comprehend the prevalent mindset of people in times that, at least at first glance, appear so different from our own. We think this book succeeds in helping the reader understand the thoughts and feelings of those caught up in The Great War.
