Great Maps (Print ISBN 978-1409345718) is out next week and presents 64 maps in chronological order, from the prehistoric Bedolina Petroglyph to Google Earth.
The diverse selection includes: Thematic mapping; info graphics; cartographic inspired artworks; celestial charts; nautical charts; topological and general cartography. Each map is shown in its entirety followed by selected details, all accompanied with commentary by historian Jerry Brotton.
Luped picture research sourced and supplied extra large high resolution images whenever possible and prepared the details to enable close-up examination of the maps.
Great Maps succeeds in showing how technology, military power, politics, religion and art have all influenced mapmakers which in turn has shaped our perception of the world.
We particularly like the way each map is reproduced at full page size or larger whenever possible; this alone sets the book apart from others and makes it very competitively priced.
